What is Rivotril?

Rivotril (clonazepam) is a prescription medication for treating panic attacks and anxiety and a fast-acting formulation. It is part of a drug called a benzodiazepine. 

It works by reducing the synaptic communication that occurs in the CNS and decreasing the serotonin level to treat seizures and activity. It is available in the market in different strengths- from -0.5 mg to 2mg. It starts to work within 45 to 60 minutes and the active duration of the drug for six to 12 hours. It is removed via the Kidneys, and the drug’s half-life is 19 – 60 hours. It stops your brain from releasing chemicals that can make you feel anxious. 

It can reduce the feeling of restlessness, tiredness, difficulty concentrating and irritability, and allied sleep problems. It works by increasing the chemical messenger’s action, reducing the brain’s and nerve cells’ abnormal and excessive activity.

What are some side effects of Rivotril?

Rivotril may have some side effects, which are as follows:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Sedation 
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased saliva
  • Difficulty concentrating / thinking 

These side effects will wash off in a couple of days and if any of the side effects persist, seek immediate medical attention.

  • Decrease effort to breathe
  • Jaundice 
  • Yellowing of eyes 
  • Hallucination
  • Allergic reaction ( hives, blisters)

Who should not take Rivotril?

  •  have sleep apnea

How to take Rivotril?

  •  Rivotril is an oral therapy for the management of panic attacks and seizures. Therefore it is important to take it as per your doctor’s instructions.
  • You can have Rivotril with or without food.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, then it is important to ask your doctor about the pros and cons of the drug.
  • Take the dose as advised by your doctor and for the stipulated time, as taking it for an extended period may result in tolerance.
  •  If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember, and if it’s time for the next dose, take it as soon as you remember.
