What is Fioricet?

Fioricet is a combination medication for managing tension headaches and relaxing muscle contraction and migraine. It has three active ingredients, Butalbital, Acetaminophen, and caffeine which alleviate pain and it induces a calming effect on the mind and body.

It is indicated for the alleviation and management of tension headaches. And it relaxes muscle contraction in blood vessels to improve blood flow and mitigate pain. The onset action of the drug is 30 to 40 minutes, and the active duration is four to six hours. It is also used for managing migraine pain.

It belongs to the class of drugs called barbiturates, and it works by relaxing muscle contraction and causing sedation via enhancement of the inhibitory effects of GABA (a). Acetaminophen is an analgesic with antipyretic properties, and caffeine is thought to enhance the pain-relieving effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital has a half-life of about 35 hours, acetaminophen has a half-life of 12.5 hours to 3 hours, and caffeine has a half-life of about 2..5 to 4.5 hours.

It is a long-acting drug, and butalbital has the longest half-life. It takes eight to ten days to exit the system. In addition, it takes five to six half-lives to get rid of the system.
